Nurse turned product designer

Mari Løvland

I design for people who are in a hurry and cannot afford to get it wrong.

  • My thesis got two hospitals to change their medication form
  • Vaktlista: 240 nurses swap shifts without phoning anyone
  • The newsletter Nattskiftet has 1,900 readers

Ten years on a hospital ward taught me more about interfaces than any course has. When a medication list is unreadable at four in the morning, the mistake is not the user's.

Now I make tools for healthcare workers. I do my best work when someone has to decide without all the information, and I am usually the one asking who will clean up afterwards.

Words from people who know me

Some have worked closely with me for years. Others know me from handball, from a workshop or because they have been my landlord.

I sat next to Mari for two days at a conference workshop in Copenhagen. We have never worked together. She still sends me things she thinks I should read, four years later, and she is right about half the time.

Why

The whole ward swapped shifts in a Facebook group with 240 members. Whoever replied fastest got the shift, not whoever needed it most. I got tired of watching people miss birthdays because they were asleep when the message came.

How

The first version was a spreadsheet and a Google form. It was ugly, but it worked. We used it for seven months before I wrote a line of code, so when the app came, I knew exactly what it had to do. I did also build a notification system nobody wanted, because it was fun to build.

Why

I got the maths wrong once. Nobody was harmed, but I still remember the feeling. The card is laminated, costs fourteen kroner to print, and has no battery to run out at three in the morning.

How

It is just paper. The hard part was working out which four calculations people actually use, and cutting the other twelve.

What others have measured

Ratings from people who owed me nothing. They show what I am like to deal with, which a CV rarely says much about.

Uber

312 rides

4,94

312 rides since 2017, averaging 4.94. Mostly home from night shifts, which means most drivers have met me at my least charming.

Airbnb

48 stays

4,9

48 stays as a guest. Hosts mostly write the same thing: she let us know, and the flat looked the way it did before she arrived.

«Mari let us know two days ahead that she would arrive late. When we got home the dishwasher was empty. She can stay here whenever she likes.»

Unpopular opinion: most "user error" in healthcare is design error with a better lawyer. In all my years on the ward I watched people write medication doses on their hand. They weren't careless. The form was just laid out the wrong way round.

Best feedback I have had on a prototype: "it looks like something I already know how to use."

Epic fails

Some people say they learn more about me here than from the rest of the page.

I sent test data to 4,000 patients

2023Legendary

A text template reading "Hi FIRSTNAME, this is a test" went out to the entire patient list because I picked the wrong environment in a dropdown. Four thousand people learned that they were called FIRSTNAME.

What I did afterwards

I pushed through a hot pink background for the test environment. Nobody has sent from the wrong one since.

I spent four months on a feature nobody asked for

2024Expensive

The notification system in Vaktlista. I was certain people wanted push alerts about open shifts. What they wanted was not to be notified at all.

What I did afterwards

Now I always ask "what would you do if this didn't exist?" before building anything. The answer is alarmingly often "nothing".

I called a consultant by the wrong name for two years

Just embarrassing

His name was Are. I said Anders. He never corrected me, and by the time I worked it out we had been colleagues for twenty-four months.

What I did afterwards

I now ask for names again after a week. People do not correct you, they just wait.

Get in touch

I am most interested in work where someone will actually use what we make, and where I get to talk to them. Do write either way.

I usually reply the same day. If I am doing an extra shift at the hospital, it can take a day.
